Final Dune Report
for 2006

 

Sept 21st, 2006

The weather is predicted to be in the 60's - 70's.

As has been happening lately, there are some vicious

witches eyes (facing the west) down below 3rd beach

or the 3rd staging area.

The sand is hard from the recent rain.

Just about everywhere has spots available, including

the NEW Campground.

A reminder....

The Douglas County Sheriff's Dept. would also like to remind everyone

that they need to Stay Out Of The Closure - the ticket is $242.00

NO Drag Racing - ticket $427.00

The speed limit from Discovery Point to the sand access is

posted 10 MPH.

They would also like to add that there is NO ALCOHOL allowed on the dunes.

Sept. 14th - 17th, 2006

Sorry, there is no report this weekend.

The Sheriff's (well, at least two) are currently working on the sandrail in Washington. Finally more pictures can be taken and posted this next week.

The final Dunes Report will be Sept. 21st, 2006


Sept. 7th - 10th, 2006

Forest Service still has available sites for this weekend

Windy Cove B 1st come/ 1st serve

Douglas County sand camping and

Half Moon Bay (new campground) are both CLOSED

Weather is expected to be in the 60's

The wind has been blowing strangely causing very treacherous dunes

below 3rd beach with witches eyes facing the south and west.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Dept. would also like to remind everyone

that they need to Stay Out Of The Closure - the ticket is $242.00

NO Drag Racing - ticket $427.00

The speed limit from Discovery Point to the sand access is

posted 10 MPH.

They would also like to add that there is NO ALCOHOL allowed on the dunes.

 


Labor Day Weekend 2006

All reservation sites are FULL.

However, Douglas County sand camping

and the NEW Campground are open for

this (Labor Day) weekend.

These sites are all 1st come/ 1st serve.

The weather is expected to be nice with temps in the 70's.

The sheriff's dept. would like everyone to know that the Dunes are fairly treacherous right now with more razor backs and witches eyes.

We had time conflicts on both sides

Look the area where you are riding over carefully.

Many of the witches eyes are hard to see and have caused a number of accidents in the past few weeks

Sand is still smooth.... Wind has been blowing

Watch out for the little razor backs...there are plenty

Discovery Point campground is Full

Forest Service camping has 9 spots available (as of Thurs. morning)

5 above 3rd beach/ 4 below

Mornings have been foggy with temperatures in the mid 60's

Sand is smooth and nice

The weather is forecast to be in the mid 60's with part sun.

ALL RESERVATION CAMPGROUNDS ARE FULL!

July 7th - 9th 2006

After the 4th of July weekend the sand is still a bit rough. A light wind has been blowing

(maybe it will help smooth things out).

The sky is partly cloudy with temperatures forecast in the 60's.

Forest Service sand camping has 5 sites that are not reserved available

on a 1st come/1st serve basis.

Windy Cove A & B - all reserve sites are taken, the non-reserved sites are

available on a 1st come/1st serve.

All in All the holiday weekend went fairly smoothly.

4th of July Weekend

 

No rain in the forecast however, it is still Windy.

The afternoons have had winds that are 20 - 30 mph.

This is making for some dangerous conditions with razor backs and witches eyes.

The sheriff recommends that everyone scout out the area that they will be riding beforehand.

The sand conditions are making it tough to get to Forest Service sand camping spots.

The Forest Service Sand Camping spots are all booked.

Windy Cove A & B Reservation spots are all filled.

The first come/ 1st serve spots are mostly filled.

Douglas County Parks has opened sand camping for this weekend only

it is 1st come/ 1st serve.

June 22nd - 25th 2006

Sand is Dry and Soft with a few wet areas (nothing major).

The wind has been blowing hard and is forecast to blow throughout the weekend but no rain!

As a consequence there are small razor backs and witches eyes.

Forest Service Camping is mostly full. Above 3rd beach as of Thursday spots 38 & 39 are available

Below 3rd beach only 4 spots available as of Thursday , these are 1st come/ 1st serve.

Windy Cove B - all reserved spots are full.

Windy Cove A - 50% full but come early filling fast!

Sand is still wet and pretty choppy from last weekend.

As of Thursday afternoon the sun had come out and the wind was blowing. Hopefully

it will smooth out for the weekend... Saturday has a prediction of rain though.

Windy Cove A & B are both pretty full but has quite a few spots that are first come/ first serve.

Forest Service camping spots 31 - 47 have 8 reserved.

From the third beach south to the closure spots 48 - 57 have 6 reserved.

The sand has smoothed out once again and is soft. However, new witches eyes are forming.

The weather is expected to be nice.

Windy Cove A has 26 sites available - 1st come/ 1st serve

Windy Cove B - has 18 open sites w/ NO hook-ups ( All hook-up sites are reserved)

Tent area is open. All are 1st come/ 1st serve.

Forest Service Sand Camping has 8 sites reserved

from Banshee hill to 3rd Beach parking lot:

sites 31-47  has  5 reserved

48-57 has  3 reserved.

  1. Sand is rough, choppy and hard (left over from Memorial weekend)

  2. The weather has been overcast however the weatherman

  3. is calling for things to clear over the weekend.

Douglas County has NO sand camping.

NO camping at Triangle Road

Forest Service land from Banshee Hill to the Southern closure

has only 3 spots reserved in sites 31 - 47 and

only 2 reserved in spots 48 -57 - the rest are 1st come/ 1st serve.
